Analogies

A Citation is like a Dog's Collar...
  • After any instructional lesson in the library, students create an appropriate analogy to show comprehension of content.
  • (A citation is like a dog's collar because it tells us the owner).

Analogy starters
  • Provide students with a series of analogy starts as pre/post assessment for a unit
  • Examples of analogy relationships include (source: TeacherVision):
    • Part to whole
    • Cause to effect
    • Antonyms
    • Synonyms
    • Definitions
    • Item to category
    • Time sequence
    • Category
    • Object to Use
    • Product to Producer

Using Analogies to Connect Kids with Books
  • Librarian organizes tables of books by genre for students to peruse. Students circulate around the room, spending time at each table with the objective of finding an interesting book to check out. At the end of the activity, students must choose one genre about which to write an analogy.
  • Librarian can create a display in the library in which students can write analogies as reviews of books they have read.
